Brief introduction

As an art form for more than 3,000 years, traditional Chinese flower arrangement is regarded as the origin of Oriental floral arrangement with profound influence. To promote this cultural essence of China, the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macau Academy of Flower Arrangement Designer jointly present “The Charm of Flowers – Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Flower Arrangement”. Featuring assorted seasonal blossoming flowers exquisitely arranged in six types of traditional Chinese containers, this exhibition gracefully presents the unique charm of the art of flower arrangement, and provides the visitors with a better understanding of this valuable Intangible Cultural Heritage in China. Exhibits keep changing regularly during the exhibition period.

Traditional Chinese flower arrangement

Traditional Chinese flower arrangement has a long history. Regarded as a cultural essence of historic, artistic and cultural value, it was inscribed on the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. This ancient art form is elegant in presentation and full of poetic sense in composition. It is a unity of form and spirit, and an illustration of imitating nature. It has been a significant way to express feelings and affections in daily life.

Six major containers for traditional Chinese flower arrangements

Six types of containers, namely plate, vase, jar, bowl, tube and basket, known as the “six major containers for traditional Chinese flower arrangements”, are used in traditional Chinese flower arrangements as tools. They play a vital role in the overall composition of the arrangements, highlighting the theme and strengthening the artistic concept.
