Exhibition of Paintings and Calligraphies Donated by Jao Tsung-I
Foreword
Professor Jao Tsung-i has been paying great enthusiasm to all cultural affairs in Macao over the years. He has donated more than one hundred pieces of paintings and calligraphies to the cultural departments of the Macao S.A.R. Government, all of which possess unique style and exquisite craftsmanship; masterpieces that are precious and splendid treasures to us all.
Professor Jao’s creations are of essence extracted from his comprehensive expertise and mastery, featuring both traditional and artistic excellence that combine the spirit of Chinese culture with his own modern creativity. Professor Jao is a scholar of great distinction widely recognized at home and abroad. The professor’s paintings and calligraphies, which are so expressive of his scholarly talents, have brought his immense erudition to its highest peak, combining scholarship and art as one. Professor Jao is also an exceptional gentleman of integrity. With brush and ink he writes and paints morality and sentiments, virtues and aspirations, injecting nobility into his works of art, making them combinations of dignity and art. These perfect combinations construct a carefree and boundless world of arts that pierces through the past and the present.
To demonstrate Professor Jao’s nobility in both personality and craftsmanship, we are pleased to present here, throughout the year, paintings and calligraphies donated by the professor. By doing so, we hope to cultivate the soil of the arts in Macao and to create a pure atmosphere throughout the city. In times of the flourishing economy, we hope to learn from Professor Jao’s pursuit of independent and foresighted thinking.
